Sonnet – He Loved Me
I remember he told me he loved me
as he took the heart I had given him,
wrapped it in brown paper, but far too thin,
for outward did the blood spilled start to seep.
I remember thinking that I should weep
but there were no tears left within my skin.
No, all I had within me was the grim,
fearful thought: I had gotten in too deep.
He buried my heart in the black of night,
and even in the sun I saw no light.
All that was colour had now faded white
but though colour-blind I still had my sight.
Our disunion was now consecrated
but still, for a time, I simply waited.
