Forever Distracted By Life

Sonnet – Memory Fracture

When I found an old journal from my youth,
I hoped that it would be a lost treasure.
From a child until grown I could measure;
accurate, by only my perspective.

The type of insight, only I could give,
is gained at work and never at leisure.
And yet; I am left wondering whether
I weathered the storm without knowing truth.

Whether lost in reality or dream;
how easily do we misremember?
Were things as they were, or as they would seem;
has my Winter come before December?

I know only of the life I have lived;
each day, as that before it, is my gift.

Author’s Note:

I wrote this poem quite recently after finding two hastily scribbled and forgotten lines in a notebook I hadn’t picked up in sone time. I liked the lines:

“I found an old journal from my youth,
I hoped that it would be a lost treasure.”

At the time they were written I wasn’t sure quite what to do with them, but as I came back to them I was inspired to try writing them into a sonnet. ‘Memory Fracture’ is the resulting poem and I feel like it is a wonderful merger of my old ideas, and new stylistic interpretations.

This poem was used as inspiration for today’s Poetry Prompt.
