A Quarter Crazy! (Hours 10 – 12)

I may now be a Quarter Crazy, but I am completely done with my first half marathon organised by the team at Quarter Crazy.

I didn’t expect to struggle so much; but tiredness kicked in hard just after the halfway mark and the last few hours were tough but wonderfully exhilarating to complete.

The most significant part of today has been the inclusive and inspiring network of poets who supported one another through this gruelling but glorious creative writing challenge and I am proud to not only have completed the challenge; but to have done so in the company of an amazingly talented and at present quite exclusive group of poets.

That exclusivity will become rarer as I’m sure more and more poets will take part in the future. I for one intend on being one of those future participants.

Hour 10

Sonnet – The Power of Thought
2020©DSCoremans

If you ever realised the power
of the thoughts and ideas you posses.
You would never have to try to impress;
nor question whether you are a coward.

The magic of life; you are empowered
knowing when to search and when to suggest.
You who have been given the time to rest
reveal inner beauty like a flower.

Your heart connects you to positive strength;
wild and free, impossible to control.
The mind holds darkness, where you find balance;
succumb to neither one to become whole.

Time spent in darkness will always be hard;
do not fight this time to rest and recharge.

Hour 11

Villanelle – Coffee & Snow
2020©DSCoremans

I have never had to shovel snow.
I’m not really one for menial labour;
I tend to wait for the winds to blow.

But I will accept if ever I go
outside, exposed to elements of nature
if ever I have to shovel snow.

Some would say my laziness shows;
others see an opportunity creator.
I tend to wait for the winds to blow

a steaming coffee; a healthy glow,
the smell can dispel any glower.
For I, who have never had to shovel snow.

Perhaps my comfort doesn’t help me grow
as I try to name exotic flavour.
When instead I should shovel the snow
rather than wait for the wind to blow.

Hour 12

Golden Shovel – Balance
2020©DSCoremans

Do you ever have thoughts?
Positive and negative, both
as necessary as good
experience, and
healthy process for bad.

I cannot order, but you must
because you deserve to live.
Give love instead of giving in;
this timeless lesson for all of us,
to ignore, is the peril of us all.

The prompt for this poem was to write a ‘Golden Shovel’ style poem. The first poem to my mind was the last I read. The line I borrowed was from Daniel Wong’s Hour 10 Poem from this marathon ‘What Are Thoughts’: “Thoughts, both good and bad,/must live in us all.”
