Villanelle – Conflict

There are so many things that I wish to do
yet it feels like my life does not belong to me,
for I am forever waiting on a forgotten cue.

While residing in my nest which was never new
I longed to stray from my confines and be free;
there are so many things that I wish to do.

A bird with wings that has never flew,
finding no sustenance or safety;
for I am forever waiting on a forgotten cue.

Dreaming of the time when life begins anew;
starting over to search for your tranquility,
there are so many things that I wish to do.

That I have no choice, is not technically true,
yet honour binds me to responsibility
for I am forever waiting on a forgotten cue.

Instead there are motions which I go through
painfully, purpose blind to possibility.
There are so many things that I wish to do;
for I am forever waiting on a forgotten cue.

Author’s Note:

That awkward moment where I have to admit this is the first ‘true’ villanelle I’ve written. Blog post to follow to explain this one better…but all I’m saying is count your stanzas people. Count your stanzas. 😜

I used this poem as inspiration for today’s Poetry Prompt.
