Villanelle – The Plight of the Empath

I don’t need forever; just a one-night stand.
I am a disposable plastic cup, used once and discarded
on this night with nothing, you can understand.

An organised fight, grown out of hand;
to feel, emotion, without feeling bombarded.
I don’t need forever; just a one night stand.

Accepting trouble with no reprimand
is an unlocked vault, left unguarded.
A night with nothing you can understand.

Together; just long enough to disband
and all is over before ever it started,
I don’t need forever; just a one night stand.

Wait for what you deserve; or demand?
A crop grown freely, may miss the harvest
on this night with nothing, you can understand.

Should you go where you want; or live where you land,
Stray from the beaten path, to one uncharted?
I don’t need forever; just a one night stand.
A night with nothing. Can you understand?

Author’s Note:

(The poem began in my mind as a reflection not on an individual craving a physical relationship, but that of a personal one. I may yet rename this poem, ‘The Plight of the Empath’ as I feel it is about the life of a carer, too focused on the lives of those in their charge to take any time for themselves.)
