I haven’t done much in the way of writing this month, at least writing that has been intended for sharing.
I did however start the year; that is already rushing in, with a great deal of creative energy by taking part in a very exclusive night of writing alongside one of my favourite writing companions, Amanda, who facilitated a New Year’s poetry writing marathon to bring us into 2021 in style.
Since then I’ve returned to University, started a new job as a Volunteer Coordinator (read administrator) for a mental health charity. It’s been an intense learning experience, but has also given me a lot of focus during an otherwise hectic month. Somewhere in amongst everything else I began writing a piece of short fiction, this evolved rather quickly into something bigger than I intended and twenty days later I am 40k words into a new WIP.
I am really looking forward to the rest of 2021. I’m not sure what it’s going to look like, but I am sure that it will be as intensely creative as it has been intensely anxious.
It’s now ten months since my family and I began shielding at home and I can still count on one hand the amount of times we’ve been outside for anything beyond emergencies and doctors appointments. As we approach a whole year of our lives spent inside I feel very far removed from the life I once lived and I have withdrawn on social media as well as I have in the real world, but I’m still hoping that in the future, as far off as it seems right now, we’ll return to some semblance of normal.
Until then it’s a mix of family-time, work, study, and of course always writing. In some senses business as normal.
