Villanelle – Return Me To My Chamber

Return me to my chamber
for it has only been a year
and I must avoid the danger.

The present lurking stranger
is a harbinger of fear,
so return me to my chamber.

The safety of a manger
saw out the first New Year,
as we avoid the danger.

Reality grows stranger;
all our problems disappear.
Now, return me to my chamber.

Soon we ride out like a ranger
looking for all we once held dear,
but still I must avoid the danger.

Now, perhaps, I am the stranger,
a blinded, sightless seer.
Please, return me to my chamber
for I must avoid the danger.

Author’s Note:

This poem was used as inspiration for today’s Poetry Prompt. I wrote this poem at the very beginning of February when I realised that having been shielding at home with family members for almost an entire year that the ongoing Coronavirus restrictions have had the most drastic impact upon our lives. While some are revelling in the freedom that vaccination efforts are providing my family and I remain inside and may yet have to do so for another year of our lives, a deeply distressing realisation that I am still processing the implications of at present.
